Sightseeing in Friuli

Friuli is a historical region whose capital city was Udine and which used to include nowaday's regions Udine and Pordenone as well as small parts of Gorizia and of the province of Venice. On one hand, Friuli is a modern touristic region with many seaside resorts on the Adriatic; on the other hand, it is full of historical sites which remind of an eventful past - Friuli also offers a large variety of typical gastronomy. • Gorizia: just cross the Piazza della Transalpina square and get into Slovenia. Do not forget to visit the medieval Castle over Gorizia to get a wonderful panoramic view of the city - then have a walk in one of the many parks or visit one of the many museums in Gorizia.
• Aquileia: in this Unesco World Heritage Site you can visit various ruins dating back from the Roman Empire - the forum and the ancient roman port are especially well maintained. We absolutely recommend you to get into the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta to admire one of the biggest still existing early christian mosaics - the Cripta degli Scavi. You can also visit the National Archeological Museum if you want to see further Roman objects and vestiges that were found in Aquileia and its surroundings.
• Pordenone: nature lovers will enjoy a walk in the district of Poffabro, listed among the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" - most beautiful districts in Italy - or in Pradis where they can admire the "Grotte Verdi di Pradis" (green caves of Pradis).
• Udine: In the middle of the city, the castle now houses two museums - the Civici Musei and the Gallerie di Storia ed Arte.
• Cividale del Friuli: Julius Caesar's Forum Iulii is now famous for its National Archeological Museum, its Lombard Temple and the Devil's Bridge.
• Palmanova: Palmanova is famous for its star-shaped fortress, called star fort: the city can only be entered across three impressive bridges.
